What establishes identity
Cast texture, transfer dies, wrong fonts, incorrect rims, altered dates, and deceptive holders. The most reliable attribution combines visible design with denomination, date, mint or issuing authority, metal, diameter, weight, edge, orientation, and manufacturing style. A marketplace title can suggest a direction, but it does not replace attribution.
Condition questions that change value
- Does remaining luster move in a cartwheel pattern under rotating light?
- Are high points worn, softly struck, or flattened by damage?
- Do color and texture continue naturally into protected areas?
- Are rims, edge devices, and denticles consistent with the attributed type?
- Does the holder certification number verify with the stated service?
