What establishes identity
High-relief 1921 pieces, mintmarks, luster, strike, and common cleaned surfaces. The most reliable attribution combines visible design with denomination, date, mint or issuing authority, metal, diameter, weight, edge, orientation, and manufacturing style. A marketplace title can suggest a direction, but it does not replace attribution.
Condition questions that change value
- Does remaining luster move in a cartwheel pattern under rotating light?
- Are high points worn, softly struck, or flattened by damage?
- Do color and texture continue naturally into protected areas?
- Are rims, edge devices, and denticles consistent with the attributed type?
- Does the holder certification number verify with the stated service?

Peace dollars began in 1921, when the circulation issue has a distinctive high-relief design; later regular issues use lower relief. The difference is not established by a seller’s “rare high relief” phrase alone. Confirm the date, design diagnostics and preservation.
Silver dollars can have bag marks, weak strikes and dull or cleaned surfaces that look similar in a single listing photo. Compare year, mint and grade, and remember that regular 1921 Morgan dollars are a different design minted in the same year.
