What establishes identity
Princely states, Mughal, British India, republic coinage, mints, and scripts. The most reliable attribution combines visible design with denomination, date, mint or issuing authority, metal, diameter, weight, edge, orientation, and manufacturing style. A marketplace title can suggest a direction, but it does not replace attribution.
Condition questions that change value
Separate circulation wear from weak strike. Then look for cleaning hairlines, scratches, rim damage, corrosion, porosity, spots, discoloration, tooling, altered dates or mintmarks, and evidence of mounting or jewelry use. Natural surfaces often carry information that aggressive cleaning destroys.
- Does remaining luster move in a cartwheel pattern under rotating light?
- Are high points worn, softly struck, or flattened by damage?
- Do color and texture continue naturally into protected areas?
- Are rims, edge devices, and denticles consistent with the attributed type?
- Does the holder certification number verify with the stated service?
Authentication workflow
Compare the coin with authoritative references and multiple certified examples. Weight alone cannot authenticate a coin, but an impossible weight can reject an attribution. The same is true of diameter, metal response, edge construction, lettering style, and die markers. High-value, frequently counterfeited, altered, or culturally sensitive material deserves expert review.
Value without fantasy
Value is specific to the exact date, mint, variety, grade, strike, surface quality, certification, color designation, provenance, and current demand. Match completed transactions closely. Do not average together cleaned raw coins, problem-free certified coins, rare varieties, common dates, and speculative asking prices.

Use the marketplace to study complete photographs, certification, grade, surfaces, seller terms, and completed-sale context. Asking price is not value evidence.
